Basic Steps to making PDF's from various applications.

Remember we are creating a file just for printing, we seperate the print process from the creation process.

Our rules are

  • Save artwork as a High Quality PDF using any of the Adobe Software suite
  • Review on screen at 100%, test print for colour accuracy, check artwork measurements

Making a PDF

Using Indesign

  • Open your InDesign Document
  • File > Adobe PDF presets > High Quality Print
  • Click Save
  • Pick Compatibility Acrobat 5
    • Tick Spreads (if your document crosses over pages)
    • Untick options such as:
      • Preserve editing
      • Optimize for web
    • Remember this is a print only document, if we want to edit it we return to the indesign file.
  • Click Save PDF

Using Photoshop

  • Open your Photoshop document
  • File > Save as
  • From the Format list Pick Photoshop PDF
    • Untick Layers
  • Click Save
  • Pick Compatibility Acrobat 5
    • Untick options such as:
      • Preserve editing
      • Optimize for web
    • Remember this is a print only document if we want to edit it we return to the psd file.
  • Click Save PDF

Using Illustrator

  • Open your Illustrator document
  • File > Save as
  • From the Format list select Adobe PDF
  • Select Illustrator Default
  • Select Compatibility Acrobat 5
    • Untick options such as:
      • Preserve editing
      • Optimize for web
    • Remember this is a print only document if we want to edit it we return to the ai file.
  • Click Save PDF

Creating a PDF from an image using Preview on a Mac

  • Open your image in Preview (in applications folder)
  • File > Save as
  • From the Format list select PDF
  • Click Save

Using other applications on a Mac

  • Open your File
  • Apple + P or File > Print
  • Click Save as PDF

Creating a PDF from Powerpoint (Mac)

  • Open your powerpoint File
  • File >Save as > Select Format as PDF
  • Click Save as PDF

Creating a PDF from Powerpoint (Windows at WSA)

  • Open your Powerpoint File
  • Click the Small Adobe Icon in the toolbar (top left)
  • Click Save
